American-Agri Women asks for swift investigation of packing plant cruelty
American Agri-Women (AAW) is horrified at the treatment of cattle by the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company in Chino, California, now under investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for violations of food safety rules and for animal cruelty.
“The vast majority of cattlemen and meat packers treat their animals with the utmost care, especially since it is in their best interests to do so,” stated AAW President Marcie Williams. “In addition to having a love of animals and of working with them, we know that when our animals are treated poorly, they don’t do well, and consequently we don’t produce an income, soon being out of business. When an incident like this happens, we feel it is of utmost importance that it is quickly investigated and that the company is immediately dealt with under the full force of the law. In this way the public can have confidence that such practices are not tolerated and that their food is as safe as humanly possible.”
American Agri-Women is the nation’s largest coalition of farm, ranch and agribusiness women, with 53 state, commodity, agribusiness affiliate organizations and collegiate chapters throughout the country. AAW is an all volunteer organization, working to provide reliable information about agriculture to the public since 1974.
