Cattle, sheep, and goats are unique in the animal kingdom due to their ruminant digestive systems, which consist of four stomach compartments. This complex system allows them to efficiently break down and absorb nutrients from fibrous plant material, which would be indigestible to many other animals.
Ruminants play a critical role in agriculture by converting grass and other forages into meat, milk, and wool. Ruminants' ability to utilize resources not directly consumable by humans makes them invaluable in agricultural systems. These animals can also help with forest management by reducing fuel loads.
